Hunting Kat by Kelley Armstrong

Kat is a sixteen-year-old vampire, and she's not too happy about it. After an experiment-gone-wrong and a bullet to the heart, she now hungers for human blood, and the worst part about that is the guilt. But guilt isn't the only thing stressing her. Kat is being hunted by the Edison Group, a dangerous Cabal that is responsible for her undead state. Kat is running out of places to hide, and she has no one to turn to — until she meets Chad and Neil. They're on the run like she is, and they offer to help Kat against their common enemy. But the boys aren't all that they seem, and for Kat, deciding whether to trust them may be a matter of life or death.

As I have stated in previous reviews, I have difficulty writing a review on a Kelley book without sounding gushy. I adore Kelley's writing style and her ability to write fantastic characters. Kat is no different, she died earlier than she thought she would but, with the help of her vampire guardian, she's dealing with it.

Even in a really short story, Kelley manages to draw you in and keep you interested. The good thing with Hunting Kat is, it gives you a little taste of the Darkness Rising world while waiting for The Calling to come out (SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!!!!!!).

If you're a Kelley fan, this is a must read. It's short (which is both good and bad) and so typically Kelley that you can't not love it.

Hunting Kat by PJ Schnyder

As a mercenary, Kat Darah doesn't have to pass for a normal human. On the edge of the solar system, she's just another biped. Most of the time.

Nearing the end of his military tour, Lt. Christopher Rygard debates the idea of hanging up his uniform for good. Looking for answers at the bottom of a glass of scotch, he meets Kat. One shared night of mutual desire seems harmless. But when their tryst is interrupted by attackers hunting Rygard, Kat must reveal her other form, the predator beneath the human façade.

Together they embark on a dangerous mission - a race against time to meet the enemy's demands, while trying to deny the passion between them. Rygard is faced with a terrible choice in the face of duty: Report the existence of a human turned shape-shifter. Or forget he ever met her.

I believe PJ Schnyder has other books out but this is the first I've read anything by her. I really enjoyed the story and characters, especially Kat. There's more of her story to be told, I feel (and hope!)

I liked the little insight we got into both Kat and Rygard's background, but she still left it open enough for future stories (good plan, Batman). Kat's the type of heroine that I like in a book, strong and independent because she had to overcome something, but then they always seem to let me down by falling for the guy or changing their ways. This was only a wee short story so Kat didn't get a chance to do that.

A good, short read. Definitely worth a peruse (check me, trying to use smart words :D )
