Magick by Trish Milburn

The covens are coming for her.

But is she a White Witch or a Dark Witch? In a war for control of the witch world, the answer will save - or doom - everyone she loves.

In White Witch, Jax gained friends she'd die for and a staggering power that threatens them all.

In Bane, Jax did the unthinkable and killed a supernatural hunter to protect her friends. She found herself lost in darkness and prisoner to the Bane, a secret society of witches sworn to prevent the use of the dark magic.

Now, in Magick, the powers of Jax and her friend Egan have been magically bound by the Bane. She must convince the Bane she can learn to control her power and become a White Witch in truth. She's their only hope now that the dark covens have called a Conclave with one purpose - to kill this generation's White Witch and anyone who has ever stood with her. If Jax can't amass an army of her own, rebuild the trust of her friends and boyfriend, and find the White Witch's elusive weapon against the dark, it may be too late.

Reviews of White Witch and Bane, the first two books in this series.

This book starts with Jax waking up chained to a chair, put there by the Bane after her dark magic took over. Determined to prove herself, she focuses all her energy into trying to harness her white witch powers and help end the dark covens forever. Along the way, new bonds are formed and Jax finds out some interesting and possibly life altering facts about herself and her new powers. All this leads up to the ultimate blow-out fight between white and dark witches.

I didn't realise this was the last book ... this saddens me 'cos I was really liking Jax and Egan. My annoyance at Jax in the last book wasn't an issue in this one, she's not as "me, me, me" as she was in Bane. She's a bit too angsty at the beginning for my liking but with good reason - she did kill a man!

She has to learn to cope with her dark magic to get her white magic under control, all while winning back Toni and Keller's trust and also gaining the Bane's trust as an ally against the dark covens. Egan and Jax manage to find other coven defectors that will help them and Jax gains an exceptionally helpful power thanks to the Bane's original ancestor.

As I said, I'm quite sad to see this series end. I'd definitely recommend the trilogy to anyone, all three books are very light quick reads so don't worry about starting another new series, it won't take long.

Bane by Trish Milburn

To protect those she loves from herself, Jax will leave them all behind.
She'll risk everything in a desperate search for answers.

Jax Pherson fled the darkest of covens and from her own father's evil. For a brief moment, her courage was rewarded. She found everything she'd ever wanted. A normal life. An amazing boyfriend. An envy-worthy best friend.

But her past put them all in danger, forcing a confrontation with the dark covens. In a life-and-death battle to save those she loved from the covens, Jax gained staggering power. Power so intense, so dangerous, she fears the darkness that now dwells inside her like a living thing.

If she can't control the power, she may yet become as evil as the witches she conquered.

With her friend Egan, Jax leaves all she's built and heads for the one place that might hold the answers she desperately needs to hold back the darkness - Salem, Massachusetts. Her research unearths a shocking discovery: the Bane, a secret group of witches dedicated to thwarting the covens.

Jax desperately needs their help in her fight against the covens, but finding the Bane is easier said than done and takes all her skills and courage. As Jax gets closer, her dark powers begin to rise and control her actions. If she succumbs to the darkness, Jax may have as much to fear from the Bane as the evil covens and the determined hunter on her trail.

Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed White Witch. The story was alright but, for some reason that I don't know, I just didn't enjoy it the same.

Jax and Egan are in Salem looking for anything that'll help them overthrow the dark covens. They attract the attention of a family of witches who didn't take in the dark powers at the time of the witch trials, so they have no power. But they do have knowledge, knowledge that will help Jax and Egan. They discover a group of witches called the Bane, who seem to stand somewhere in between the dark witches and the no-power witches. But they also attract the attention of an infamous witch hunter, one who is known for not seeing shades of grey when it comes to his prey.

Jax came across as very selfish in some parts of this story, particularly near the end. She seems to be becoming and "everything is about her" character, and I'm hoping this will change as I'm liking this series so I'd like to continue but if Jax becomes too annoying, I probably won't.

White Witch by Trish Milburn

Witchcraft Is Her Family’s Business. No One Quits The Family And Lives To Tell About It.

"Jax" Pherson has power, enough power to know her future will end in service to the dark coven her father controls. Unless she can stay hidden in a small community in the mountains of North Carolina. She must find a way to live without magic and deny the darkness she feels welling up inside her — the same dark power that fuels the covens around the world. All she wants is a normal life. A boyfriend. Friends. Some place to belong, but all too soon Jax's barely begun new life hangs in the balance when she discovers that the boy she's attracted to is sworn to kill her kind. He's a hunter with good reason to kill everything that goes bump in the night.

Even the most fleeting use of her power is tantamount to signing her death warrant and will bring both hunter and coven down on her. But can she walk away when her friends are threatened by an old evil? Something created by the magic of witches? Jax's only hope of survival is to convince the boy she loves to forget everything he's ever been taught and help her find a way to fight the covens. To believe there is some good in her.

I really like this book, even though it does have the background of "all witches are evil" but Jax doesn't believe this and sets about trying to prove it - to herself and others.

Well written characters and the storyline is paced well enough to keep the reader interested. I like how Milburn describes a witch's power, it kinda comes across like lightning but I get the impression it's not something you can see. So imagine invisible lightning.

Definitely a good first book in the series and one I'll be keeping an eye on for future releases.
