Tempest Reborn by Nicole Peeler

Anyan may be trapped in an evil dragon and Blondie may be gone, but Jane knows one thing: she's not about to give up. She's ready to tear down heaven and earth to save her lover, despite those who believe he's lost.

Luckily for Jane, those who've given up on Anyan do not include those closest to her. Defying The Powers That Be, Jane and Company form their own crack squad of misfits, in whose hands the fate of the world may well rest.

With a little help from her friends, the Universe, and lots of snacks, Jane embarks on her greatest adventure yet, confident that with great sacrifice comes great reward. The question is, who will be that sacrifice?

Jane has just lost Anyan and Blondie and now she's expected to keep on fighting to get rid of the Red and the White. Unfortunately, nobody is entirely certain how to do that and whether she can get Anyan back. She fights on and the Creature helps her find someone who can help and she has hope that she can save Anyan while defeating the Red and the White.

Ah, the last book ..... wait that should say, Aaargh! It's the last book *sob*

OK, I think I have that out of my system. Peeler is on top form as usual with her writing, this last book is just as funny as the last five but also as serious as you would expect a possible "end of the world" book to be (well, an end of the world book that involved Jane True and her varying friends).

I was both looking forward to and fearing reading this book - I wasn't disappointed, it was a great ending to the series. Peeler is good at not leaving lots of open storylines so she didn't have a lot of things to tie off in this one. I have to say I wasn't in love with the ending - I won't say why but I just wasn't feeling it.

I loved this series and will continue to recommend it to people - I can also get my tattoo idea into play now that all the books are out.

Country vs Country - Jane True

Haven't done one of these in a while, Country vs Country is when I compare the American and British covers of some of my favourite series. This time round it's Nicole Peeler's Jane True series.

Above are the US covers - by far, my favourite covers. As you will see below, the UK ones are very blah. I like the cuteness of these covers & that they're whimsical - it was the cover for Tracking the Tempest that put me onto the series. I saw it and thought, "This looks like a fun series" so I researched and bought Tempest Rising.

Now, if I had seen these covers first? I might not have discovered this amazing, sexy and funny series. The UK covers don't look like they fit the series. The UK publishers need to up their game a bit to compete with the US covers, methinks.

What covers do you prefer?

Something Wikkid This Way Comes by Nicole Peeler

Capitola, Moo, and Shar are the halfling ladies of Triptych: supernatural private investigators who get paid to clean up paranormal messes.

Normally Cappie doesn't take human cases, but who can resist a priest, missing Catholic school girls, and a creature that may or may not be the Prince of Darkness?

A story set in the world of Nicole Peeler's Jane True series.

Another novella from one of my favourite series that I've been waiting ages to read - it finally became available in the UK today.

Set in the Truniverse but with no Jane True, the story follows Cappie, Moo and Shar as they go undercover at a school to try and find some missing girls. Who the priest thinks has been taken by Satan since the girls were caught naked in public or in lewd acts. The trio are in for a shock when they find out what is going on.

I loved this little (too little) short, Peeler can keep your attention even in a few pages. This is just as well written and as funny as the rest of the Jane True series. If you're a Jane True fan, then you must read this. If you're not a Jane True, what is wrong with you?!? Don't worry, there's a cure - go to your local bookstore and pick up a copy of Tempest Rising.

Tempest's Fury by Nicole Peeler

Jane's not happy. She's been packed off to England to fight in a war when she'd much rather be snogging Anyan. Unfortunately, Jane's enemies have been busy stirring up some major trouble ... the kind that attracts a lot of attention. In other words, they're not making it easy for Jane to get any alone time with the barghest, or to indulge in her penchant for stinky cheese.

Praying she can pull of a Joan of Arc without the whole martyrdom thing, Jane must lead Alfar and halflings alike in a desperate battle to combat an ancient evil. Catapulted into the role of Most Unlikely Hero Ever, Jane also has to fight her own insecurities as well as the doubts of those who don't think she can live up to her new role as Champion.

Along the way, Jane learns that some heroes are born. Some are made. And some are bribed with promises of food and sex.

Re-reading my reviews of this series, I realise how fickle I am in my literary crushes. Apparently I liked Ryu to begin with but I am now totally Team Anyan. Even more so since Jane and Anyan finally get it on in this book! Peeler has been a tease with the Anyan loving but she finally lets us get some this time round.

Jane and Anyan are in England ready to fight a war that Jane is to be champion of, only she has trouble believing that part. The Red and White are trying to rise, they are uber bad guys from long ago that rise every so often to cause havoc until they are knocked down and subdued - never actually dying. Jane's old enemies, Morrigan and Jarl are the ones trying to do the rising this time and Jane surprises herself by her lack of needing revenge and actually wanting and needing to help for the better good.

Peeler seems to be fast joining a group of authors that I have difficulty writing an unbiased review for. There are several of them now, that just keep on giving me great reads that I can only squee over. She has a fantastic sense of humour and really knows how to drag you into her world so you never want to leave. She's also a huge tease in the fact that most of her books end in cliff-hangers that make me wish time machines were real so I could fast forward to when the next book comes out.

A must read for any Peeler fan, and a series that I will forever be recommending to people.

Eye of the Tempest by Nicole Peeler

Nothing says 'home' like being attacked by humans with very large guns, as supernatural halfling Jane True discovers when she arrives in Rockabill. These are professionals, brought in to kill, and they bring her love interest Anyan down before either of them can react. Seeing Anyan fall awakens a terrible power within Jane, and she nearly destroys herself taking out their attackers.
Jane wakes, weeks later, to discover that she's not the only thing that's been stirring. Something underneath Rockabill is coming to life: something ancient, something powerful, and something that just might destroy the world.
Jane and her friends must act, striking out on a quest that only Jane can finish. For whatever lurks beneath the waters of the Old Sow must be stopped ... and Jane's just the halfling for the job.

I had put off buying the last couple Jane True books purely because I don't like the new UK covers.

But I then realised that the US covers are also slightly different so I'll just have to live with change and I'll be buying the ones I've missed next week.

This book couldn't come soon enough for any Anyan fans (like me), because this is the one where we get some Anyan sex ..... or so I was hoping. But Nicole Peeler is a little tease in her writing, every time Jane (and I) get to close to some Anyan sex, we get interrupted! And oh boy, there's a good lot of Anyan in this book which pleases me to no end.

I had totally forgotten how funny Nicole's writing was. With Jane describing her fantasy of humping Anyan's kitchen stove (which sounds like me a bit), and lines like "Undulating is polite for greasy" when describing her hair. Peeler has a real talent for keeping a reader hooked in the story, there's always plenty of funny, snarky lines and the sexual tension between Jane and Anyan is .... well, amazing! But of course, I would love an Anyan of my very own so I may be a tad bias in my views.

If you like Urban Fantasy and you like hot smexy scenes, then pick up a Jane True book. Jane is a totally loveable and relatable lead character and she's so easy to slip into after a day at work.

Tempest's Legacy by Nicole Peeler

Release date: 01/01/2011
After a peaceful hiatus at home in Rockabill, Jane True thinks that her worst problem is that she still throws like a girl - at least while throwing fireballs. Her peace of mind ends, however, when Anyan arrives one night with terrible news . . . news that will rock Jane's world to its very core.

After demanding to help investigate a series of gruesome attacks on females -- supernatural, halfling, and human -- Jane quickly finds herself forced to confront her darkest nightmares as well as her deepest desires.

And she's not sure which she finds more frightening.

Amazing third Jane True book from Nicole Peeler. Jane True really comes into her own in this and we get to see her getting stronger and realising her full potential. She gets news of her mum and works through her feelings for Anyan while trying to further the investigations into the 'clinics' found in Tracking the Tempest.

Nicole has a great writing style. She keeps you on the edge of your seat and begging for more and sticks in a whole heaping of funny as well. It's not often an author can have me laughing out loud but Nicole manages to do it regularly. Which, when I'm reading the book at work, makes me come across as a wee bit crazy!

Fantastic story written by a fantastic author and I cannot wait for the next installment, Eye of the Tempest. And here (since I just found it after posting this one) is the review for Tempest Rising, just in case you want to read this one first. The reading order is Tempest Rising, Tracking the Tempest then Tempest's Legacy.

Tracking the Tempest by Nicole Peeler

Jane True has almost come to terms with her supernatural heritage ... almost.

Valentine's day is fast approaching, however, and Ryu - Jane's bloodsucker boyfriend - can't let the day go by without getting all gratuitous. This time his shenanigans involve a last-minute ticket to Boston and a hefty dose of interference in her life.

And when Ryu's best laid plans inevitably go awry, Jane winds up embroiled in an investigation involving a spree of gruesome killings. All evidence points towards a being of tremendous power ... who, much to Jane's surprise, may just turn out to be another halfling.

I can't think of a word that would accurately describe how much I love Jane True and the world and characters that Nicole Peeler has created.

Jane is just beginning her training since learning of her Selkie heritage, and her relationship with Ryu is still in the beginning stage. This book sees her struggling to keep her new life and her old life seperate and also puts her relationship with Ryu to the test.

I'm glad we get to see more of Anyan in this book, I really like the Barghest and hope he continues to pop up in future books. And Jane and Ryu's relationship? *fans self* HAWT!! I want me one of those, for xmas maybe? Please?

Seriously, I can't give this series enough praise. The characters, the world, the pacing and the story are all fantastic.

Tempest Rising by Nicole Peeler

Living in small town Rockabill, Maine, Jane True always knew she didn't quite fit in with so-called normal society.
During her nightly swim in the freezing winter ocean, a grisly find leads Jane to startling revelations about her heritage: she is only half human.
Now, Jane must enter a world filled with supernatural creatures that are terrifying, beautiful and deadly - all of which perfectly describe her new 'friend' Ryu, a gorgeous and powerful vampire.
It is a world where nothing can be taken for granted: a dog can heal with a lick, spirits bag your groceries and whatever you do, never - ever - rub the genie's lamp.

I'd only heard of this book through the Falcata Times book review blog. It was the second book in the Jane True series that was reviewed there but the cover image instantly caught my eye and when I saw the first one in Forbidden Planet the other week, I snatched it up.

Never having read anything by the author before, I didn't know what to expect. Nicole Peeler is a fantastic author. Her characters are fabulous and really come to life on the page. I loved Jane almost instantly.

The storyline was well paced, not too slow but not too much happening all at once either. The humour was subtle as well. I'm not a fan of overdone humour or humour that's not actually funny, Ms Peeler done a good job.

I could easily see myself being friends with Jane, she's quirky and very likeable, as are her friends, Tracy and Grizzie. Ryu is HOT! I may have a crush on him *blush*

All in all, a very well written story that grabs you and holds you 'til the end. I'm glad I picked it up and can't wait until I can buy the next one.

5/5

Oh yeah, and the cover also gave me a tattoo idea so HUGE bonus there!
